As you follow the Great River Road, keep your eyes peeled for all the little boat ramps along the way. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have a boat — they offer a great chance to get out of the car and really look around. Which, after all, is the whole point of going for a wander.

You’re never quite sure just when the fall color’s going to be at its peak, so if you’re smart, you’ll go ahead and clear your weekends in October. Because whenever you’re able to wander up the river and then take a turn in toward apple country, it’s a good time, but when you can time it right, there’s absolutely nothing like it.
